Detailed Itinerary - Page 4
Madidi NP, La Paz, Rurrenabaque, Pampas and Chalalan

Day 3 - Trip to the Pampas - cont.

During the rainy season the river level is at the same level as the pampas. As we navigate the meander of the river we are being observed by large number of caimans, some of which are rather large (in the rainy season the caimans are dispersed throughout the pampas). Some disappear quickly below the murky waters of the river some stay put, following the canoe with their gaze. On old tree trunks that have fallen onto the river, one can see river turtles which quickly disappear from the sight as the canoe approaches. At more accessible banks one can see groups of capybaras, which stare at the canoe for a while and then quickly disappear in the bushes. With bit of luck one can spot a sloth or some monkeys in the top of the trees that flank the river. In the late afternoon we arrive to our spartan campsite.

If we arrive early we can spend some time fishing and with bit of luck we will end up with some fish that can be added to our dinner menu, could be that we might even catch some piranhas.

After dinner we depart for a nocturnal ride along the river, where we might be able to spot some nightlife using our torches.
