Day 3 - Trip to the Pampas

Exact program of the trip to the Pampas depends on the site that will be chosen, there are quite a few possibilities to choose from and all also depends on the weather and the road conditions. However the programs are nearly identical, only the places visited are different, nevertheless usually one visits the pampas in the area of river Yacumo.

We leave Rurrebanaque early in the morning, passing through the village of Reyes and continue in northeast direction. The countryside here is flat and consists of grazing pastures where one can see the zebu cattle. The pastures are covered with high tough grass, and have many small lakes which are visited by many species of birds, and here and there, there are islands of trees which give the livestock some shade. If one is lucky in the trees one can spot a toucan or see a flock of parrots to fly over. Eventually we arrive to the village of Santa Rosa where we have lunch and continue to the banks of River Yacumo. Here we board motorized wooden canoes and depart upstream towards our base camp. The river is surrounded by trees thus one has the feeling of being in the middle of jungle, and not in a grassland, especially in the dry season when the bank is several meters above us.
