In the morning we leave Samaipata and head to the largest Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. We drive along the bottom of a deep valley following the river Bermejo. There are some beautiful views of the hilly country surrounding us as we drive. There are also some unique weekend houses along the way, with spectacular locations at top of small hillocks overlooking the valley. We arrive to “La Angostura”, meaning “The Narrows” where the valley narrows between the rock cliffs cut out by the river Piray, and suddenly the road comes out to a flat plane. The wavy mountain road gives away to a straight road passing through numerous small towns and villages, as this is a land rich in agriculture and thus heavily populated. We pass through the towns of El Torno and La Guardia, and enter the outer suburbs of Santa Cruz. However before we enter Santa Cruz proper, we visit the nature reserve “Lomas de Arena”.
