Day 9 - Visit of Cooperative Mines and Convent of Carmelitas

After a breakfast we join a tour of the cooperative mines in the Cerro Rico. The mines are at 4500m above the sea level and can become quite hot, it is not uncommon for people who are not used to high altitude to become short of breath and even to faint inside the mine. If preferred the visit to the mines can be replaced with a stroll of the colonial part of Potosi. The visit to the mines however gives quite interesting insight to the hard live of the local miners, and to the hard conditions under which they work. Before going to the mine you will be issued with some protective clothing and a head lamp. Before the entrance to the mine we also visit the local market where we have the chance to buy some little gifts for the miners (soft drinks, coca or even dynamite).

After the mine tour we have lunch and little bit of rest, then we visit the Carmelitas convent which will give us the insight into the strict regime the girls had to follow after they have been admitted to the convent. This is quite interesting visit and should not be missed. The convent is still functional; however visitors are only allowed to visit the part of the convent which serves as a museum.
