The rock has been vandalized by treasure hunters and by tourist, and thus in the last few years, the access to the rock has been restricted to fenced off areas and viewing platforms.
In the afternoon our journey continues with the visit of the southern tip of Amboro National Park at the locality called Yunga. The road to Yunga passes through several different climate zones. We start at the semidry valley of Samaipata and eventually end up in a humid fern forest with magnificent views of the whole southern region of the Amboro National Park. It is true jewel of Bolivian nature, as seven different ecosystems converge in this area.
There are two possible routes that can be taken to Yunga, one is usually not driveable during the wet season, however if both are driveable we take one to Yunga and the other out of Yunga, making a small circuit through the lovely wild countryside. At Yunga, there is a wooden path made through the giant fern tree forest, helping in preservation of the local flora and also making the walk easier. The whole walk is about 2 km and is a pleasant walk through the tropical vegetation, which is represented by hundreds if not thousands of different species. If lucky, one can also spot some of the local fauna, including many bird species. After the walk we return to Samaipata through the longer, but more comfortable route passing through Mairana.
