Day 7 - Explore Salar de Uyuni - cont.

Our next stop is the Salt Hotel which is several kilometres from the shore of the Salar. There are several “salt” hotels in the area of the Salar, but this is the only one which is actually constructed on the Salar. The whole building is made of salt blocks and even the furniture inside the hotel is made from them. From the hotel we drive northwest across the Salar to the northern shore, to the stone village of Coquesa situated at the shores of the Salar in a shadow of the volcano Tumupa. Up in the slope of the volcano, several kilometres above the town, is a cave with old Indian mummies. The local community with some foreign aid is trying to build a little tourist complex in the area, and at the moment very little is known about these mummies which have been found by the locals in the surrounding caves and all moved to one larger one. The countryside is very interesting and picturesque, presenting beautiful views of the Salar with rocky foreground and volcanos as a background.
