Valley of the Moon, Santiago de Collana and Palca Cañon (TE01-04-VSP) Page 4

14:30-15:45 Santiago de Collana – Palca Cañon (35 km - 25 mi)

The road from Santiago de Collana continues to gentle rise along the ridgeline with alternative views of the La Paz river valley and the Palca river valley. There are unforgettable views of Mt. Illimani and Mt. Mururata. There are also views of the particular rock formation, called Devils Tooth (Muela de Diablo). Eventually the road reaches its highest point, at about 4300 m (14108 f) and a view of La Paz city will open in front of us. If the visibility is good, we will be able to see Mt. Chacaltaya and Mt. Huayna Potosi on the distant horizon. We will start to descent towards La Paz until we connect with the cobble stoned road which leads to village of Palca. Here we will turn away from La Paz and continue in easterly direction, towards Palca. After several curves we will reach Animas pass, from which we will be able to see Mt. Illimani and Mt. Mururata again. A mile beyond the pass there are strange erosion needle like formations. Here we turn off the main road and start to descent, along the old road to Palca, to the bottom of the Palca Cañon.
