Valley of the Moon, Santiago de Collana and Palca Cañon (TE01-04-VSP) Page 3

12:15-13:00 Tahuapalca

Tahuapalca is a small community which grows vegetables and fruits for the La Paz market. Due to its relatively low altitude (2200m – 7218 f), the climate is warm, and all kinds of subtropical fruits can be grown here (figs, oranges etc.). We will have our boxed lunch here.

13:00-14:30 Tahuapalca – Santiago de Collana (25 km – 15.5 mi)

We will turn off the main road and start the trip back towards La Paz. The road here is narrow, very little used and climbs steeply in a series of 360 degree curves up to the Pijchu ridgeline. There are marvellous views of Mt. Illimani and Palca and La Paz river valleys. The hillsides are covered with sparse vegetation, as this area is fairly dry, there are primitive plantations of tuna cactus. Eventually the road stops climbing and follows gentler incline of the ridgeline until it arrives to Santiago de Collana, small village made of unbaked mud bricks.
