Valley of the Moon, Santiago de Collana and Palca Cañon (TE01-04-VSP) Page 2

10:45-11:15 Huayhuasi

Here we will take a short stroll among the flower and vegetable fields which are irrigated by the water from river La Paz and seem like little oasis surrounded by desert like high valley slopes.

11:15-12:15 Huyahuasi – Tahuapalca (25 km – 15.5 mi)

Road continues down along the River La Paz, the cobblestones are replaced by dirt road. The valley gets deeper and the sides steeper. We will pass several communities, and one or two dry mudslide fields. These during the rainy season can isolate the communities for days from the outside world. As we descent further down, suddenly we will get a magnificent view of Mt. Illimani (6402 m – 21003 f). For the last few kilometres the road follows the riverbed and since river La Paz has to be forded several times, it is only passable during the dry season. Eventually we will meet up with river Palca, which meets river La Paz at the base of the Illimani massif. Here we will have the full view of the majestic Mt. Illimani.
