Day 3 - Visit of Local villages and the Islands of the Sun and Moon - cont.

It has a large pre-Colombian stairway which climbs among terrace fields up to the stone fountain with three springs. There are local women and children everywhere trying to sell all kinds of local handicrafts. Our tour continues to Challapampa, a small port at the north side of the Island of the Sun. Here we leave our boat and continue on foot to Chinkana. On the way we pass the focal point of solar worship for the Inca and other prehistoric cultures on the Island of the Sun, the Sacred Rock, from which the sun first rose. Chinkana is a relatively large site, the multiple passageways and internally connected rooms lend a maze-like feeling to this complex (hence its name, which means labyrinth). We can spend some time here, to fully appreciate the magnificent sceneries of the lake, and to fully explore the complex. We return to Challapampa and take an hour boat ride to the Island of the Moon, if the weather conditions are favourable; we will be able to see the glacier covered Andes (Cordillera Real) on the horizon above the lake. On the Island of the Moon we visit Iñak Uyu (The Temple of the Moon). There is a large terrace wall built with finely fitted classic Inca stone masonry. Once our visit is completed we return to the small port on the mainland, to our vehicle, if the weather is good, there will be beautiful views of the Mt. Illampu showing up behind the Island of the Moon, and Mt. Illimani behind the Straight of Tiquina. From Yampupata we return back to Copacabana.
