Tiwanaku + Lake Titicaca (TE03-01-TL)

Day 3 - Page 1

8:00-13:00 Exploration of Copacabana

After a delicious breakfast we shall start our exploration of Copacabana on foot. First we shall climb up small hill, Kesanani (or Niño Calvario) where there is a pre-inca construction called Horca de Inca (Incas gallows), which seems to be astronomic observatory. Then we will visit the Intikala (so called Inca’s seat), these are huge carved stone blocks, left behind from pre-Columbian times. Our tour follows with the visit of the famous Moorish-style Cathedral, and its museum devoted to the virgin of Candelaria. After that we shall scroll through the street stalls offering all kinds of artesian artefacts for sale and make our way to the Calvary, which is on a rocky outcrop above the town. This is a destination for many pilgrims. Here native priests perform ceremonies which blend ancient believes with catholic faith. There are stations of the cross all the way to the top of the hill (each station donated by different family), from which there is a magnificent view of Copacabana and the Lake Titicaca. One can also see the Island of the Sun from here. Then we will have our lunch before we start the journey back to La Paz, at the hotel or in any of the numerous restaurants in Copacabana.

15:00-15:40 Copacabana – San Pedro (40 km – 24.9 mi)

From Copacabana we will return along the same road to the Tiquina Straight, and if the sky is clear we will be able to enjoy magnificent views of Cordillera Real over the Lake Titicaca, and even catch a glimpse of the highest mountain of Bolivia, the Sajama volcano.
