Tiwanaku + Lake Titicaca (TE03-01-TL)

Day 2 - Page 1

8:00-9:00 Copacabana – Zampaya (15 km - 9.3 mi)

After a lovely breakfast we leave Copacabana. We will follow a little used road which follows the lake shoreline towards north and leads to the tip of Copacabana peninsula. It goes through picturesque countryside full of magnificent views of the Lake, and passes through several communities and coves. Mountain sides are doted with terraced fields, and coves with small fishing boats, there are also some communal trout farm near the shore. Eventually we turn off the main road and start to climb along a off-road track until it reaches the ridgeline, here we connect with an old pre-Columbian paved path and we will descents on the other side of the ridge to village of Zampaya, which is about 200 m (656 f) above the Lake Titicaca.

9:00-9:30 Zampaya

The village of Zampaya is the only village in the vicinity which is build on top of pre-Columbian settlement, thus most buildings still have walls made of rocks instead of unbaked clay bricks. There is also good view of the Island of the Moon, in good weather there are nice views of the Cordillera Real and Illampu can be seen from here. We will take a short walk through the narrow paths between the houses of the village.
