Day 19 - Visit of the El Encato Waterfalls - Noel Kempff Mercado national park

We start our day with breakfast and then board our vehicle to drive roughly 30 km to the end of the track. The track goes through a humid tropical forest and savannah. The savannah is home to the rare and endangered maned wolf which has some resemblance to the red fox but a taller version. Once we pass the savannah, the track returns to a dense tropical forest. After driving several kilometres the track virtually disappears in the undergrowth and sometimes it is necessary to use a saw or axe to keep going. Eventually we arrive at the end of the track where we leave our vehicle behind and continue on foot.

Here we follow a trail for several kilometres, passing through tropical rain forests, where orchids, bromelias and palms can be sighted amongst the park's 4,000 plant species as we continue towards the falls. Mahogany (very rare now due to illegal logging), cedar and rubber trees also thrive here. Eventually we arrive at the falls which flow from the Huanchaca Plateau. There is a deep pool below the 80 m falls, but it is quite dangerous due to rock erosion and a distance needs to be kept at the falls. Those whom are up to it can have a swim in the pool that is far enough from the walls of the falls. After a short break, a snack and a dip in the pool we return back along the same track to the vehicle.

From here we continue back to our Los Fierros base camp. We have dinner and in the evening we take another trip to the see the local night life.
