Day 2 - Visit Tiwanaku and drive to Copacabana on the Lake Titicaca - cont.
(Llama steak, dehydrated potatoes etc.), we depart for Copacabana.

During good weather conditions there are spectacular views of Andes (the whole chain of eastern Cordillera Real). The road passes through small communities and is lined with small fields of local crops. After some time it reaches Lake Titicaca, and continues along the shores of the lake with some spectacular views.

Eventually we reach the Tiquina straight. Here we have to ferry our car across on a wooden barge, passengers go on a separate little motorized boat. There is an immigration control in San Pablo as the Peruvian border in nearby. The straight can be pretty choppy if the wind is strong. After the crossing the road sharply rises and follows a ridgeline from which there are alternative views of Minor and Major Lake. Also good examples of terrace fields can be seen from the road for the first few kilometres. The road keeps rising until it reaches the altitude of about 4200 m, then it starts to decent until it reaches the town of Copacabana.

Copacabana is the most beautiful town on the whole lake of Titicaca, it is a pilgrimage destination for hundreds of pilgrims during the holy week who walk there all the way from La Paz, to pay homage to the Virgin of Candelaria. During the year it is also favourite weekend destination for Paceños (La Paz inhabitants), who come to scroll along the beach, or come to get their car blessed at the famous Cathedral. There are beautiful sunsets over the lake.
