Day 4 - Drive to the jungle town of Coroico through Cordillera Real

We start our day early with the visit of the Calvary Hill. This is the hill above Copacabana, which is a destination for many pilgrims. Here native priests perform ceremonies which blend ancient believes with catholic faith. There are Stations of the Cross all the way to the top from where there is a magnificent view of Copacabana and of the lake. We follow with the visit the famous Moorish-style Cathedral, and its museum devoted to the virgin of Candelaria. The main square in front of the cathedral is usually filled with cars, especially on weekends, which are waiting for the blessing. After the visit of the cathedral we depart Copacabana and return by the same road to the Tiquina Straight, and if the there is not any cloud cover we will be able to enjoy magnificent views of Cordillera Real over the lake, and even catch a glimpse of the highest mountain of Bolivia, the Sajama volcano. After the crossing of Tiquina Straight we drive to Huatajata, where we have lunch at one of the restaurants which dot the lakes shoreline and have magnificent views of the lake.

After lunch we return along the Altiplano back to La Paz, however we bypass the centre of the city by one of the roads that follow the contour of the large valley. There are some spectacular views from this road of the city below. This road eventually joins the main road to Coroico and it leaves La Paz, and after passing the toll both it steadily climbs towards the Cumbre Pass at 4660 m (15289 f). The countryside here has a pretty desolate look. There are only llamas in evidence and begging dogs along the road.
