Destination Cotapata National Park

Cotapata National Park has an area of 58,620 ha (144,850 acres) and it covers ecoregions of Highlands, Humid Forest and Evergreen. It has diverse ecoregions due to its variations of altitude (from above 5000 m (16400 f) to 1000 m (3280 f)). Due to diversity of ecosystems, the Park hosts a great range of organisms. 735 species of flowering plants have been recorded in the area, of an estimated total of 1,800 species, there is a profusion of epiphytic plants, such as orchids and bromeliads and there are many species of ferns, melastomataceae, araceae, cactaceae and palmeae. In terms of fauna, there is a great variety of vertebrate species - 284 have been reported: 66 mammals, 183 birds, 14 amphibians, 11 reptiles and 10 fish. The park’s western highlands are home the Andean condor, North Andean deer, the Andean fox , the mountain viscacha. The home ranges of the spectacled bear and puma span from the high-Andean ecosystems to the montane cloud forest. Among the most outstanding inhabitants of the cloud forest ridges are the ocelot, dwarf brocket deer, some curassows and toucans, as well as the “tunqui,” or Andean cock-of-the-rock .The Yungas Montane forest is home to several mammals such as the spider monkey, white-fronted capuchin and river otter.

It is easily accessible from two points: El Cumbre pass about 40 km (25 mi) form La Paz (highland) and Huarinilla river (humid forests), about 120 km (75 mi) from La Paz. the well known Choro inca trail passes through the park. Also the new road from La Paz to northern Bolivia passes through the park.
