Pasto Grande, Chulumani + Coroico (TE04-02-PCC)

Day 1 - Page 3

09:30-09:45 Chuñavi – Lambate (5 km – 3.1 mi)

From Chuñavi the road starts to descent into Lambate, which is a major village in this area and has a regular connection with La Paz via bus or truck. Lambate at 3225 m (10581 f), has a pleasant climate and is perched below Mt. Illimani at the head of the valley of Chunga Mayu river. There are beautiful views of Illimani and of the valley.

09:45-10:45 Lambate – Bridge over Chunga Mayu river (30 km – 18.6 mi)

Beyond Lambate there is very little traffic and the road is in very little used. The road steadily descents and passes through two different climatic zones. First it reaches humid tropical zone with tropical butterflies and lush vegetation, where we have to ford several creeks which plunge from the Illimani massif. After several kilometres and further descent, the road reaches the rocky cañon of the Changa Mayu River, at 1800 m (5906 f). The climate here is much drier and the vegetation follows the trend, different types of cactus can be seen here. And with luck we will see flocks of parrots flying by.
