Destination Rurrenabaque

Rurrenabaque (or simply Rurre) (pop about 15,000) is a small, picturesque jungle town on the banks of the Río Beni (River) in the Bolivian Amazon Basin. It used to be a small sleepy farming, fishing and cattle rising village until the mid 90s when it became a major tourist destination as it lies at the edge of Madidi National Park and near the wet grasslands called pampas. Its first steps to fame started as an Israeli tourist got lost and nearly died in the vicinity of Rio Tuichi. Consequently he wrote a book about his ordeal (back from Tuichi), which became rather popular among the young Israeli travelers who travel quite a lot throughout South America in large groups after they finish their military service. As more and more Israelis started to visit the town and started to explore the surrounding areas, the town started to make its name among European travelers too. The tourist boom was boosted furthermore by the article about Madidi National Park published by National Geographic. Now, more and more tourists arrive every year to see the wildlife in the pampas and the natural beauty of the Madidi National Park. The sleepy village has become a town bustling with life.

It is about 550km from La Paz, reached by 1 hour flight or 15 hour drive along rather "interesting" road through the Andes.
