Destination Madidi National park

Madidi National Park is located in the northeastern corner of the La Paz department, its area of 1,895,750 ha (4,684,481 acres) makes it one of the largest protected areas in Bolivia. From the summits of the Altuncama mountains to the savannas and jungles of the Heath and Madidi rivers in the Amazon basin, the park harbors an impressive altitudinal range of nearly 5,500 m (18, 045f). Its topography is mainly mountainous, with abrupt relief and deep canyons, which determines a great variety of ecological zones. The park’s high latitudinal range and rugged topography ensures a large variety of habitats, with 1,875 plant described to date out of an estimated total of 5,000. This is matched by an exceptional animal diversity composed of at least 1,370 vertebrate species, including 156 mammal, 867 bird, between 192 and 296 fish, between 79 and 109 reptile, and between 84 and 88 amphibian species (more than 30 of which are endemic to the protected area). In fact, Madidi National Park could be the most biodiverse protected area in the world.

Among the 156 reported mammal species, the most remarkable are the spectacled bear, Andean cat, puma, jaguar, tiger cat, and a great variety of primates: spider monkey, red howler monkey, white-fronted capuchin, black-capped capuchin and squirrel monkey. In addition to these, a new primate species of the Callicebus genus has been encountered.

The easiest access to the park is via the town of Rurrenabaque (which actually lies in Beni department) about 550 km (340 mi) from La Paz (1 hour flight or 14 hours drive)
