Destination Carrasco National park

Carrasco National Park is located in the department of Cochabamba in the tropical zone corresponding to the “Sub-Andean Belt.” Overall, the park’s climate is warm and humid, but it includes high-altitude mountains and semi-arid highlands towards its southern border. It has an area of 622,600 ha (1,538,472 acres).

Because of its altitudinal range from (300 m to 4,700 m – 980 f to 15, 420 f), Carrasco National Park harbors an exceptional variety of natural ecosystems and, as a result, a remarkable biological diversity. A wide range of tropical mountain ecosystems are represented, such as premontane forests, moist evergreen cloud forests, semi-humid montane forests and semi-humid Puna. Over 5,000 plant species have been registered in the area and no less than 200 orchid species have been recorded. An astonishing 448 bird species have been reported for the park, which represents approximately 30% of all birds recorded in Bolivia. The park’s representative vertebrate species include the spectacled bear, north Andean deer, jaguar, Andean cat, oilbird, tapir and the South American coati.

The park is also a constant source of conflict between government and illegal coca growers who penetrate deep into the park to slash and burn large tracts of vegetation and plant coca plant which could be used for manufacture of cocain paste.
