Day 9 - La Paz - sightseeing

In the morning we visit the several museums that La Paz has to offer and we finish our tour at plaza Murrillo, the “power” square of La Paz, as here we have the parliament and governmental palace. Here the Bolivian history has been forged and future is decided.

For lunch we descent to Southern Zone of La Paz, which is the more exclusive part of La Paz, where the upper and middle upper class of Paceños live. After lunch we visit the Valley of the Moon. The road to the Valley of the Moon follows the river La Paz, southeast past the exclusive La Paz tennis Club and some exclusive suburbs of La Paz with luxurious houses.

Valley of the Moon, as the name suggests has an eerie moon-like landscape produced by water erosion, with very little vegetation. The vegetation is of desert type, cactus mainly. The valley, or rather what is left of it, is now protected area. There have been attempts to use the area for real estate development, fortunately that have been stopped. There are short walks through the area with excellent photo opportunities. One can see the La Paz golf club (the highest situated golf course in the world) and weather permitting, one can also see the Muela de Diablo (rock formation) and in the distance top of Mt. Chacaltaya (highest situated sky lift in the world) from here. You can also buy some local artesian products here (wood carvings mainly) from the locals. If you are lucky you might get a glimpse of local hummingbirds.

After the visit of the Valley of the Moon we return to the city centre and visit Plaza Murrillo, where the other La Paz cathedral is found, and there is also parliament. We finish the day with a dinner and folklore show.
