Tiwanaku, Lake Titicaca and Coroico (TE05-01-TLC)

Day 1 - Page 4

16:30-17:00 San Pablo – San Pedro (1 km – 0.6 mi)

San Pablo and San Sedro are small villages on the opposite sides of the Tiquina straight. Here we have to ferry our car across on a wooden barge, passengers go on a separate little motorized boat. There is an immigration control in San Pablo (passport required), as Peru is just around the corner. Here is also a major Bolivian “navy” base. The straight can be pretty choppy if the wind is strong.

17:00-18:00 San Pedro – Copacabana (40 km – 24.9 km)

The road from San Pedro sharply rises and follows a ridgeline from which there are alternative views of Minor and Major Lake Titicaca. Also good examples of terrace fields can be seen from the road for the first few kilometres. Road keeps rising until it reaches the altitude of about 4200 m (13780 f), then it starts to descent until it reaches the beautiful town of Copacabana. Copacabana is the most beautiful and picturesque town on the whole of the Lake Titicaca, it is a pilgrimage destination for hundreds of pilgrims during the holy week who walk there all the way from La Paz, to pay homage to the Virgin of Candelaria. During the year it is also favourite weekend destination for Paceños (La Paz inhabitants), who come to scroll along the beach, or come to get their car blessed at the famous Copacabana Cathedral.

19:00 Dinner at the Hotel Rosario del Lago

The Hotel Rosario del Lago is one of the best (if not the best) in Copacabana, with a beautiful views of the lake and beautiful sunsets. We will check into the hotel and order our dinner. Those who love fish will not be disappointed with the local speciality of the local lake trout.
