About Bolivia - Page 6

In the north the lowlands reach into the Amazonian jungle. The central part consists of pampas which are dotted with little islands of trees and palms. During the rainy season pampas are flooded and turn into vast marshes. In the east of the central zone is the great wetland of Pantanal. In the winter time it is relatively dry, however during the rainy season it gets around 1200mm of rain, so towards the end of summer the whole countryside turns into one large swamp with little islands of firm land which are drier and have forest cover. These knolls then became refuge for the local animals. Here you will also find the remains of the little know so called Baur culture, which consists of straight paths and elevations which are dispersed over large areas of pampas. Function of these structures, which are usually only distinguishable from the air, is still largely a mystery.

In the south there are drier savannah and llanos, which turn into so called Chaco plain, further south one goes the drier the savannah become.

The lowland region has three important cities; Cobija, in the north, Trinidad in the centre and Santa Cruz in the south. Flora and fauna is fairly rich here, you will find here armadillos, sloths, anteaters, tapirs, monkeys, opossums, the largest rodents in the world: capybaras, jaguars and other felines and many species of birds. There are many species of reptiles, including the largest of them all; anaconda, and several species of caimans. In the rivers and lakes there are many species of fishes, the most famous of these are the piranhas, or the fresh water dolphins “botos”, poisonous stingrays and electric eels. There are also various species of frogs, some of which excrete poison from which the Indians make poison for their arrows. And the list could go on and on.
