Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon) is one of the many lakes found in the Eduardo Abaroa National Park at the Altiplano near the border with Chile. Its area is about 60 sq km (23 sq mi) and maximum length and width are 10.7 km (6.6 mi) and 9.6 km (6 mi), its average depth is 35 cm (14 in). It lies at the altitude of 4285 m (14060 f)
It is a salt water lake and has islands of borax in its southeast and northeast sectors. The particular red color which has several different hues is a result of red sediments and also due to red pigment of some of the algae that are found in the lake. It is a nesting place for the Andean flamingos, and other birds who feed on the algae.
