Destination Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve

Tucked high in the Andes, in the far southwestern reaches of Bolivia, is the country's most visited protected area. The mountains of Eduardo Avaroa are the highest Andes Mountains on Bolivia’s border with Chile and Argentina. They are dotted with erupting volcanoes, hot springs, steaming geysers and fumaroles.

The reserve has the area of 714 475 hectars (2760 sq mi) average altitude of 4000m (13125 f), average temperature is 3 C ( 37.4 F) and has on average 65 mm (2.56 in) of yearly rainfall.

The reserve has been established to protect the local flora and fauna.

There are 23 mammals some of which are pumas, Andean foxes, vicuñas and a rabbit-like animal known as the vizcacha. There are 80 species of birds that live in the reserve, the freshwater lakes and saltwater lagoons are nesting sites for three of the world's six flamingo species - Chilean, Andean and James flamingos, beside the flamingos you can find here Andean geese, falcons, ducks and large, and the lesser rhea - an ostrich-like flightless bird. At least 190 species of plants and trees grow in this hardscrabble environment, some of which are yareta, keñua. They have adapted to harsh conditions of salinity, lack of fresh water, low temperatures, and scarcity of nutrients.
